John Hoyland

John Hoyland was born in Sheffield in 1934 and studied at The Royal Academy, London from 1956 to 1960. He was was influenced by American abstract expressionism and in the 1960s and 70s lived and worked for long periods in New York. 

Throughout his career he had a number of successful exhibitions and he was elected Royal Academician in 1991. His work is held in numerous public collections around the world. John Hoyland died in 2011 and is regarded as one of the finest abstract artists of his time.
