Artist Statement Concepts Concepts: 'The unifying aspect through all of my work is a love of light and atmosphere coupled with a minimalist sense of form and structure'.
Ideas: My work is premised on the personal belief that the more minimal an image is the more it arouses a feeling of involvement in the viewer - sort of less is more. I work from direct experience - I need to be physically involved with the source of my imagery.
Themes: I am drawn to the sublime rather than the beautiful - to mist and quietness - winter and age. My images come from landscape, earthworks, stones - patina, traces and remains.
Influences The landscape sculpture photographs of Richard Long. The techniques and aesthetics of Ben Nicholson. The philosophies of Peter Lanyon. Prehistoric cave paintings - ancient religious sites - stones and circles of stones. Patina, traces, remains.
Career path 1989-90 MA, Fine Art, Birmingham Institute of Art & Design 1983-86 BA Hons in Fine Art from Wolverhampton Polytechnic
Since graduating I have exhibited consistently in both group shows and solo exhibitions. In 1995 I was Artist in Residence at Grizedale Forest in Cumbria, a life changing experience which resulted in my living and working in North Yorkshire for the last eight years. During that time I received two awards from Yorkshire Arts. At present I am living again in the West Midlands, mainly for family reasons. I now plan to develop new work; possibly revisiting my experiences with the long-view of a refugee from the North! Within the next five years or so, I hope to be able to undertake further suitable residencies and see where they may lead me.
