At his finest Marc Chagall must rank as one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century and certainly one of the leading lights of the School of Paris. Russian born, in 1887, Chagall moved to Paris in 1923 meeting the great print publisher Ambroise Vollard who at once recognised the artist's genius and commissioned him to make two great suites of etchings Gogol's Dead Souls and the Fables of La Fontaine. Chagall continued to make original prints throughout his life, his work dominated by memories of Jewish life and the folklore of his early years in Russia.
