David Morris

The Valley, Sandsend

David Morris was born in Knaresborough and studied painting and printmaking at Harrogate School of Art. He continued his studies in painting and sculpture at the Slade School of Art, London from 1959-1961. While pursuing his own practice, he began teaching part-time at Bradford College of Art and Harrogate College of Art where his teaching included responsibility for printmaking. This medium became a special interest to him as an artist.

Since retiring from full-time teaching in 1994, he has concentrated on his own work as a painter and printmaker. His work follows in the strong tradition of etching and English landscape painting. Etching is a medium that he enjoys and explores to the full. Observation and drawing are at the heart of his work, the Yorkshire landscape providing much of the subject matter. His recent visits to Cornwall have offered new starting points.

He has a longstanding attachment to the Yorkshire coast, often working on the spot in less well known places like Port Mulgrave or Skinningrove and developing ideas further in his Harrogate studio. He aims to capture the character and mood of the subject, whether it is a single tree or a panoramic coastal landscape.

David has exhibited in many mixed and group shows including:

The Royal West of England Academy, Bristol

The British Print Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London

The Manchester Academy of Fine Art.

His work is in private collections worldwide and has recently been purchased by the House of Lords for the Parliamentary Works of Art Collection.
